What to do now

  1. Freeze your credit for free at Equifax, Experian and TransUnion, and request an IRS Identity Protection PIN at irs.gov to block fraudulent tax returns in your name.
  2. Contact your state DMV to ask whether your license number should be replaced, and watch for accounts opened with your ID.
  3. Consider reporting the exposure to the U.S. State Department if you see suspicious activity; a new passport invalidates the old number.
  4. Your date of birth is often used to verify identity: add a fraud alert to your credit file so lenders must confirm it is really you.
  5. Call your bank, ask about extra monitoring or a new account number, and review statements for small unknown charges.
  6. Ask the school which records were involved and whether any account credentials need to be reset.
  7. Get your free credit reports at AnnualCreditReport.com and look for accounts you do not recognize.
  8. Call the CDE helpline at 1-833-931-8488 if you have questions about your letter.
